Shahrivaragan Festival: Honoring Justice and Strength

For thousands of years, Iranians have celebrated various occasions with cultural festivals, each held annually or seasonally. These traditions, rooted in Zoroastrian customs such as sharing food and drink and gathering for friendly assemblies, have been preserved through the ages.

Shahrivaragan is one such ancient Iranian festival, held in honor of the divinity Shahrivar, the protector of justice, strength, and power. Observed on the fourth day of Shahrivar in the Zoroastrian calendar (the sixth month of the Iranian calendar and the final month of summer), this festival highlights the importance of justice, solidarity, and prosperity in society. Shahrivaragan, also known as the “Festival of Fire,” emphasizes harmony between humanity and nature as taught in Zoroastrian philosophy.

This festival, sometimes referred to as “Fathers’ Day” in ancient Iran, is one of the 12 monthly Iranian celebrations and is associated with water festivals. Historically, it coincides with the birth anniversaries of Shah Darab (King Darius) and the great Mani. Traditional customs of this festival include lighting fires, gathering together, and sharing food with those in need.

History and Features of Shahrivaragan

The roots of Shahrivaragan trace back to ancient Iran and the Zoroastrian faith. On this day, Iranians expressed gratitude to Shahrivar by wearing new clothes, lighting fires, and reciting prayers from the Avesta. The term “Shahrivar” means “ideal dominion” or “perfect sovereignty,” symbolizing a just rule and societal balance. Key features of this festival include emphasizing kindness, justice, and service to others. In ancient times, it was also an opportunity to assist the less fortunate.

Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations to be delivered to the Harvest Project, which will be present at the venue to assist in distributing aid to those in need. This festival is inspired by the spirit of generosity.
